Leonardo Valerio Noto is a Full Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental, Aerospace, Materials Engineering (DICAM) at the University of Palermo, Italy, where he has served since November 2019 after previously holding the position of Associate Professor since January 2015. His academic career at the University of Palermo began in November 2001 as a University Researcher in Hydraulic Engineering. Professor Noto graduated with honors (110/110 cum laude) in Civil Engineering from the University of Palermo in 1994 and earned his PhD in Hydraulic Engineering from the University of Reggio Calabria in 2000. His international research experience includes multiple visiting scientist positions at MIT (2004 and 2006, totaling 10 months) and Georgia Tech (2015, 4 months), where he worked in the research group of Professor R.L. Bras. His research focuses on hydrological modeling, ecohydrology, and soil-climate-vegetation interactions, with particular emphasis on statistical analysis of hydrological extremes (floods and droughts), GIS applications in hydrology, and spatial analysis. Professor Noto has made significant contributions to understanding climate change impacts on Mediterranean hydrology, especially in Sicily. His recent work demonstrates a strong focus on climate change impacts on extreme precipitation, advanced flood modeling techniques, ecohydrological vegetation dynamics, and carbon sequestration through enhanced weathering. Professor Noto serves as an associate editor for the ISI journals Hydrological Processes and Water Resources Management and reviews for more than 10 ISI journals. He is an active member of CINID (Interuniversity Consortium for Hydrology), the Scientific Council of SII (Italian Hydrological Society), and WARREDOC (Research and Documentation Centre on Water Resources). He also served on the ASN Commission for SC 08/A1 (2021-23). With over 240 conference presentations and more than 90 peer-reviewed journal articles, Professor Noto has established himself as a leading researcher in Mediterranean hydrology. His research collaborations extend to the University of Michigan, Georgia Tech, and the University of Washington. He has supervised numerous graduate theses on diverse hydrological topics and leads projects developing early warning systems for urban flooding and analyzing climate change impacts on Sicilian water resources.
