Stephen Cushion is a Professor at Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture, where he leads significant research in political media and journalism studies. His work critically examines the intersection of news media, democratic processes, and evolving journalistic practices. His research interests focus on political journalism , public service media , and 24-hour news cycles , with particular expertise in election coverage and alternative political media. Cushion investigates how media framing influences political discourse and democratic engagement, especially through live and interpretive journalism formats. Current research projects include ESRC-funded ‘Beyond the MSM: Understanding the Rise of Alternative Online Political Media’ and BA-funded ‘Accurate or Misleading? The Portrayal of MSM in Alt-Left Media’ , analyzing emerging media ecosystems and their societal impacts. His scholarly contributions span three sole-authored books, one co-authored volume, and two co-edited collections exploring news evolution and political coverage. As Principal Editor of the Journal of Applied Journalism & Media Studies , he shapes academic discourse in journalism practice and media theory.
