Ioannis Plakatouras is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Ioannina, Greece, where he has held an uninterrupted academic career since 1997, progressing from Assistant Professor to full Professor in 2011. He leads the Laboratory of Magnetochemistry, has co-supervised numerous MSc and PhD students, and has participated in several national and European research programmes. Perlepes) Research interests His research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of coordination compounds , spanning from classic Werner-type complexes to extended coordination polymers and metal–organic frameworks. A major theme is bioinorganic chemistry , investigating the interaction of essential (Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺) and toxic (Ni²⁺) metal ions with peptide fragments derived from histones and enzymes. Complementary work targets the design of Gd(III) and lanthanide complexes as MRI contrast agents and the study of magnetochemical properties of transition-metal and lanthanide systems. Research output & trends With over 65 peer-reviewed publications, his work shows a clear evolution from fundamental synthetic and structural studies of mononuclear complexes (late 1980s–1990s) to the construction of multi-dimensional coordination polymers and supramolecular architectures (2000s–2010s). Recent articles increasingly integrate computational chemistry and explore functional materials with potential biomedical applications, reflecting a strategic shift towards translational inorganic chemistry. Laboratories & teams Since 1999 he has been Scientific Coordinator of the Laboratory of Magnetochemistry , University of Ioannina, managing instrumentation for magnetic susceptibility and EPR measurements. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Laboratory of X-ray Crystallography, facilitating single-crystal and powder diffraction studies.
