Rick McCown is a Professor of Education and the Pierre Schouver, C.S.Sp. Endowed Chair in Mission at Duquesne University. He has served as Department Chair and Interim Dean, and currently acts as Duquesne's Principal Investigator for the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). His roles include Co-Editor of the CPED White Paper Forum and Senior Improvement Research Fellow for CPED. McCown holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Indiana University (1980) and an A.B. in Psychology (1974), both from Indiana University. He has been honored with the Maris and Mary Higgins Proffitt Award for Outstanding Dissertation and numerous teaching accolades, including Duquesne's highest teaching award. His research focuses on educational leadership, design-based research, and the nexus of research, advocacy, and policy for social justice. He contributed to the UCEA Leaders Supporting Diverse Learners project and is active in the UCEA Center for Educational Leadership and Social Justice. McCown's work bridges educational psychology and pedagogical practices, emphasizing collaboration between schools, academia, and communities. His publications span over four decades, addressing themes like restorative justice in education, improvement inquiry, and learning-centered approaches to teaching. Notable works include Psychology Applied to Teaching and contributions to the CPED's scholarly forums. Awards include the AERA Presidential Citation and induction into the Pennsylvania Society of Teaching Scholars. McCown has been recognized for advancing research and teaching excellence at Duquesne, including the Office of Research Hall of Fame and multiple teaching awards. His interdisciplinary efforts in social justice and academic leadership reflect a commitment to institutional mission and equitable education practices.
