Research Fellow
David McBey is an Advanced Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen's School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition, based at the Rowett Institute on Foresterhill Campus. His work focuses on sustainable and healthy diets within the Scottish Government RESAS programme, examining pathways to dietary change across the food system. His educational background includes a PhD in Sociology (2017), MRes in Social Research (2008), and MA in Sociology (2007), all from the University of Aberdeen. Previously, he worked in the University of Aberdeen Environmental Modelling Group on agricultural practices in China and Ethiopia. McBey's research centers on behavior change mechanisms for sustainable diets, with particular emphasis on meat consumption reduction. His work integrates sociological perspectives with nutritional science to address food system transformation. Recent publications analyze public attitudes toward sustainable diets, youth perspectives, meat-eating contexts, and policy interventions for dietary shifts. He actively supervises PhD students in Sociology, currently guiding Tonwong Sudto's research on Thai rice farmers' sustainable agriculture intentions and Aura Anderson-Ross's study on service robots promoting sustainable buyer choices in supermarkets. His teaching includes Sustainable Diets and Global Food Systems (RN5506), previously teaching Worlds of Food, Introduction to Sociology, and foundational Sociology courses. Based at the Rowett Institute, McBey collaborates on the Scottish Government RESAS programme and contributes to interdisciplinary projects including WWF's net-zero agriculture pathways and Food Standards Scotland dietary pricing research. His work bridges academic research with practical policy applications for sustainable food systems.
