Professor
Dr. Krystel Huxlin is the James V. Aquavella Professor of Ophthalmology at the Flaum Eye Institute at the University of Rochester, where she served as Director of Research from 2012 until 2024. She is currently the Associate Director of the Center for Visual Science and co-Director of its Training program, with additional appointments in the Center for Visual Science, the Institute of Optics, and Departments of Neuroscience and Brain & Cognitive Sciences. Dr. Huxlin earned her Bachelor of Medical Sciences (1991) and Ph.D. in neuroscience (1994) at the University of Sydney, Australia, before joining the University of Rochester Ophthalmology faculty in 1999. As a distinguished researcher, she has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and holds 12 patents related to visual restoration and corneal treatments. Her research focuses on understanding neuroplasticity in the damaged adult visual system, particularly following cortical damage, with the goal of vision restoration. She leads the Visual Perceptual Restoration Laboratory (VisPeR Lab), which studies how the visual system repairs itself after damage and develops new approaches to restore vision. Her work spans cortical blindness rehabilitation, corneal wound healing mechanisms, and the development of LIRIC (Laser-Induced Refractive Index Change), a novel non-surgical paradigm for laser refractive error correction. Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on cortical visual restoration, with emphasis on the mechanisms underlying visual recovery after occipital stroke, the role of attentional mechanisms in visual rehabilitation, and the development of innovative training paradigms. Her research increasingly integrates advanced neuroimaging techniques, virtual reality environments, and non-invasive brain stimulation to understand and enhance visual recovery processes. Fellow of Optica (2022) Fellow of ARVO Trainee Academic Mentoring Award in Basic Science (2023) Vision Sciences Society President (2024-2025) Board of Reviewing Editors at eLife and Journal of Vision Dr. Huxlin has been instrumental in mentoring numerous students and researchers, with several current trainees working on projects related to cortical visual impairment, stroke-induced blindness, and corneal wound healing. She has secured significant research funding through the UR CTSI Center for Visual Science and various NIH training grants. Her VisPeR Lab maintains active collaborations with researchers at multiple institutions including NYU, Oxford, UCL, RIT, RPI, Hopkins, Harvard, and EPFL in Switzerland, creating a robust network for advancing visual restoration research.
