Professor
Professor James Morgan is a leading academic and clinician in ophthalmology at Cardiff University's School of Optometry and Vision Sciences. He holds a professorial position and serves as a consultant ophthalmologist at the University Hospital of Wales. His primary research focuses on understanding optic nerve changes in glaucoma, with a particular emphasis on early detection and neuroprotection strategies. He chairs the Expert Working Group for shared care glaucoma in Wales, driving innovations in virtual clinics and clinical pathways. Morgan's work integrates clinical practice with cutting-edge research, utilizing techniques like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and retinal imaging to study structural and cellular changes in glaucoma. His lab investigates mechanisms of retinal ganglion cell death, exploring gene therapy, neurotrophic factors, and extracellular matrix modulation. Collaborations include projects on nicotinamide neuroprotection and the role of mitochondrial function in disease progression. He has authored over 200 publications, spanning clinical trials, neurobiological studies, and technological advancements in ophthalmology. His contributions include developing risk prediction models for glaucoma progression and evaluating cost-effectiveness of monitoring strategies. Morgan also engages in translational research, with studies on probiotics and Alzheimer's-linked retinal changes.
