Antoinette E. DeNapoli is the John F. Weatherly Professor of Religion and Chair of South Asian Religions at Texas Christian University's AddRan College of Liberal Arts. Her research focuses on gender and religion , goddess traditions , gurus and divine personalities , and religion in globalization . A Ph.D. from Emory University (2009), she specializes in ethnographic methodologies and theories of religion. Her research interests span asceticism, devotion, mysticism, and the intersection of religion with human rights. She co-edited special issues on female religious influencers and Buddhist representation, and her 2014 book Real Sadhus Sing to God redefined gender dynamics in Rajasthani vernacular religion. Her scholarship (2014–2024) explores female gurus' authority , goddess feminism , Brahmanical hierarchies , and activist spirituality . Recurring themes include gender activism , spiritual economics , and reformist monastic practices . Teaching courses like Hindu Religious Perspectives and Women Influencers in Asian Religions , she bridges academic and lived religious experiences. Her 2024 Religions conclusion to the special issue on female Hindu influencers synthesizes cultural mechanics of holiness and resistance to patriarchy .
