Dr. Cristina Suárez Gómez is a Full Professor of English Linguistics at the Department of Spanish, Modern and Classical Languages, University of the Balearic Islands. She has held this position since October 2022, following her national accreditation in November 2021. Previously, she served as a tenured Senior Lecturer from October 2010. Her academic career spans over two decades with significant contributions to the field of World Englishes and historical linguistics. Her educational background includes: MA in English Language and Literature, University of Santiago de Compostela (1997) Master in Linguistics, University of York (2003) PhD in English Linguistics (European Doctorate), University of Santiago de Compostela (2004) Dr. Suárez Gómez's research focuses on World Englishes, historical syntax, and language variation . She has made significant contributions to understanding relativization processes, morphosyntactic variation, and the expression of perfect forms across different English varieties. Her work often employs corpus-based approaches to analyze linguistic phenomena in both historical and contemporary contexts, with particular attention to contact varieties like Gibraltar English and Bangladeshi English. Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on grammatical structures across diverse English varieties, examining patterns of variation through comparative and transnational perspectives. She frequently collaborates with Elena Seoane and Lucía Loureiro-Porto, contributing to major reference works like The New Cambridge History of the English Language and editing special issues on World Englishes for prominent journals. Dr. Suárez Gómez has received significant research funding from Spanish national agencies, including as Principal Investigator for the project "Morphosyntactic variation in New Englishes" (Spanish Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, grant FFI2011-26693-C02-02) and co-Principal Investigator for a project on morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes (Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, PID2020-117030GB-I00, 2021-2024). She has supervised several PhD students to completion, including Laura García-Castro (2020), and currently supervises Pablo Vilas, Anastasia Beloborodova, and Victoria Rodríguez Lázaro. Dr. Suárez Gómez is an active member of the research community, having served as convenor of the Sociolinguistics and Dialectology panel at AEDEAN conferences (2012-2015) and as treasurer of the Spanish Association for English and American Studies since November 2016. She is also a member of the Consolidated R+D+I Group "Corpus-based Approaches to Language Variation (CAVA)" and co-leads the compilation of ICE Gibraltar within the International Corpus of English project.
