Alex McMahon is a Reader in the Dental School at the University of Glasgow's School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing. With a background in Statistics from Glasgow University, he has built a distinguished career spanning industry medical statistics, academic research, and teaching in epidemiology. His work bridges dental and medical research, with a particular focus on population health studies and clinical trials across multiple institutions including Glaxo Group Research, Data Analysis and Research Limited, Medicines Monitoring Unit at Dundee University, and the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics at Glasgow University. McMahon's research interests center on the design and analysis of observational and experimental human studies, with current work primarily focused on dental and cancer epidemiological projects. He has designed significant trials including a randomized controlled trial of fluoride varnish treatments for the Childsmile Programme. His methodological expertise spans clinical trial design, data analysis, and epidemiological study methods, with particular emphasis on health inequalities, dental public health, and cancer epidemiology across multiple publications from 2001-2025. His recent publications demonstrate consistent research activity examining head and neck cancer trends, dental health inequalities, and evaluation of public health interventions. The pattern across his work shows strong methodological rigor combined with practical applications in public health policy and implementation, particularly through his involvement with Scotland's Childsmile Programme and national dental inspection initiatives. Among his notable scientific contributions are his membership as a Chartered Statistician (CStat) with the Royal Statistical Society since 1998 and his active participation in the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology. These professional affiliations reflect his standing in the statistical and epidemiological communities. As an educator, McMahon teaches the Research Methods course for post-graduate students and supervises PhD candidates including Katharine Sharpe, Jamie Kidd, and Mitana Purkayastha. He also maintains an honorary NHS position as Consultant Epidemiologist with the Information and Statistics Division, where he contributes to the Scottish National Dental Inspection Programme, demonstrating his commitment to translating research into practice through sustained engagement with public health policy.
