Josh Benaloh is a Senior Cryptographer at Microsoft Research and an Adjunct Professor at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Washington. He has spent 17 years on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Cryptologic Research and is renowned for his 1987 Yale PhD dissertation introducing homomorphic encryption for end-to-end verifiable elections. S.B., MIT M.S., M.Phil., Ph.D., Yale University Research Interests focus on cryptography, voting systems, and quantum computing. His work bridges mathematical theory with real-world applications, particularly in secure election technologies like ElectionGuard, which uses homomorphic encryption and mix-nets for verifiability. Scientific Leadership includes serving on program committees for major cryptography/election conferences and co-authoring the 2018 National Academies report Securing the Vote — Protecting American Democracy , which shaped election integrity frameworks. Advising & Projects include mentorship of PhD interns Anunay Kulshrestha (Princeton) and Karan Newatia (University of Pennsylvania) on enhancing ElectionGuard for mail-in voting and quantum-resistant systems. He also explored voter verification techniques and dispute resolution challenges in cryptographic elections. Labs & Teams are the Microsoft Research Special Projects group and the MSR Cryptography group, where he drives innovations in secure voting and cloud security. He previously chaired Seattle’s Sound Transit Citizen Oversight Panel and contributes to puzzle design competitions.
