Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Plessing serves as Head of the Institute for Hydrogen and Energy Technology and Research Group Leader for Innovative Energy Systems and Hydrogen Technologies at Hof University of Applied Sciences' Faculty of Engineering. Appointed in 2013, he was dean of the faculty from 2015 to 2021 and currently directs the Institute for Water and Energy Management while chairing the hlb Landesverband Bayern since 2017. Education: Mechanical Engineering (Thermal Engineering specialization) at RWTH Aachen University Doctorate: Laser optical investigations of turbulent combustion processes conducted with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory His research focuses on biomass-to-hydrogen conversion, solar ice storage systems for heating/cooling, regenerative district heating networks, and gasification technology with integrated tar removal. He develops practical solutions for sustainable energy in industrial and building contexts, emphasizing international collaboration with Indian universities and real-world implementation through projects like the zwe building's large-scale heat storage system. Recent publications (2020-2021) reveal a concentrated effort on optimizing biomass gasification for clean hydrogen production, advancing ice-battery applications in industrial cooling, and improving renewable district heating networks. These works demonstrate a clear trajectory toward scalable decarbonization technologies for heating and industrial processes, with strong emphasis on system efficiency and integration of renewable sources. Prof. Plessing leads multiple funded initiatives including ADerN (European Social Fund), InEs (Federal Energy Research Programme), OpToKNuS, and PuLaMa. His energy laboratory at Münchberg campus features specialized test stands for biomass gasification, ice storage, and solar thermal systems, enabling experimental validation of novel energy technologies while supporting industry knowledge transfer through training programs.
