Associate Professor
Annapaola Parrilli is a research scientist and project leader at Empa's Center for X-ray Analytics (CXA) in Switzerland. She is habilitated as an Associate Professor in the Italian higher education system in the field of Materials Science and Technology and is actively involved in advanced imaging and materials research. She is affiliated with Empa, a leading Swiss federal research institute focused on materials and technology, under the '400 - Materials Meet Life' and '499 - Center for X-ray Analytics' divisions. Her research interests include: 3D and 4D imaging of organs and tissues Integration of imaging and biomechanics Biomaterials and tissue engineering Regenerative medicine Development of contrast agents for preclinical and translational research Advanced microtomographic techniques in orthopedic research She is the Principal Investigator of an SNF-funded project (2020–2024) on the 3D imaging of the microvascular anatomy of the meniscus. Her work bridges materials science, biomedical engineering, and clinical applications, with a strong emphasis on non-destructive evaluation and imaging technologies. She teaches in the Master in Biomedical Engineering program at the University of Bern, offering courses in 'Introduction to Material Science' and '(Bio)Materials', as well as a one-day Empa course on 'Introduction to Non-Destructive Analysis and X-ray Imaging'. Annapaola Parrilli is a member of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS) and serves as a scientific chair for PhD and postdoc fellowships at the FWO (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) in Belgium. She is also a peer reviewer for several prestigious journals including Acta Biomaterialia , Biofabrication , Journal of Microscopy , and Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties . She previously spent ten years at the IRCCS Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Italy, a leading orthopedic hospital, before joining Empa. Her PhD was obtained from the University of Pisa in Italy, focusing on advanced microtomographic techniques for evaluating biomaterials in orthopedic applications.
