Professor
Prof. Albertjan Tollenaar is a Professor of Empirical Legal Studies and Local Governance and Director of the Groningen Graduate School of Law (GGSL) at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Law. He holds a PhD in Administrative Law from the University of Groningen and conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy in Munich. His research focuses on regulation, soft law, administrative law, social security law, and local governance, with international collaborations in Tanzania and Indonesia. He serves as a visiting professor at several Indonesian universities. Prof. Tollenaar's ancillary roles include chairing Advisory Committees for Objections in municipalities such as Groningen, Eemsdelta, and Borger-Odoorn. His teaching includes courses on Empirical Legal Research. He has led research projects like 'From Knowledge to Policies: A Governance Approach to Enhance Access to Clean Water in Indonesia' (KNAW-ANGIN 2020) and 'Maintaining Administrative Justice in the Dutch Regulatory Welfare State' (NWO 2020). His publications span administrative law, public policy, and governance in both Dutch and international contexts. He frequently engages with media as an expert on legal and administrative issues, contributing to public debates on municipal policies, social security, and governance reforms.
