Kathryn A. Cunningham is a Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), and Director of the Center for Addiction Sciences and Therapeutics (CAST). She holds the Chauncey Leake Distinguished Lecturer Professorship in Pharmacology. Her academic career includes a BA from the University of St. Thomas (TX) and a PhD from the University of South Carolina. She completed executive leadership training through the ELAM program at Drexel University and earned a Certificate in Business Administration from the University of Houston/UTMB. Her research focuses on the neuropsychopharmacology of abused drugs, particularly cocaine use disorder, and the development of novel serotonergic medications. Key contributions include identifying the roles of serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors in addiction, and pioneering translational research with medicinal chemists to design therapeutics. She has led NIH-funded projects for 26 years, resulting in 118 peer-reviewed articles, three patents, and over 45 mentored trainees. Her work bridges neuroscience, pharmacology, and clinical practice, aiming to reduce relapse in addiction and obesity-related disorders. Dr. Cunningham's awards include the Astellas Award for Translational Pharmacology, Marian Fischman Memorial Award, and Mentorship Award from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence. She serves as Associate Editor for ACS Chemical Neuroscience and Nature Neuropsychopharmacology . Her research integrates behavioral, molecular, and cellular approaches, collaborating with synthetic chemists and neurobiologists to advance addiction therapies.
