Clinical Professor
Ewan Pearson is a Clinical Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University of Dundee, with adjunct and visiting roles at the University of Lund and University of Edinburgh. He serves as an Honorary Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School and leads the BHF Data Science Centre’s Diabetes Data Catalyst. Doctor of Medicine (PhD), Peninsula Medical School (2005) Wellcome Trust Clinical Training Fellowship, University of Exeter Chief Scientist Office Clinician Scientist Fellowship in Dundee Research Interests: Ewan focuses on phenotypic and genotypic determinants of drug response in diabetes , especially metformin and sulfonylurea , and stratified approaches to diabetes management . He leads the IMI-DIRECT project on type 2 diabetes stratification and the £2.8M iDiabetes programme for precision care in Tayside. Recent Articles highlight trends in precision diabetes treatment , including AI-driven drug response prediction , metformin pharmacogenetics , and cardiovascular risk stratification in type 2 diabetes. Collaborative projects like SOPHIST and ADMISSION address multimorbidity and obesity outcomes . Scientific Awards include the EASD Minkowski Award (2017), Diabetes UK Dorothy Hodgkin Lecture (2020/2021), and Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2022). He received multiple Diabetes UK/Servier Type 2 Diabetes Research Awards (2003, 2006, 2007). Grants and Leadership: Ewan co-chaired the Wellcome Early Career Awards Committee and holds major grants from the Wellcome Trust , Health Data Research UK , and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation . His public engagement includes Cafe Science Dundee and Discovery Days presentations.
