Clinical Professor
Johan Michael Burisch serves as a Clinical Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, holding a dual appointment with the Capital Region of Denmark. He is also a chief physician at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital's Gastrounit and holds the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences (dr.med.). Dr. Burisch's research program centers on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), where he integrates epidemiology, multi-omics approaches, and individualized treatment strategies. His work includes leading large-scale studies like the ECCO-EpiCom project to explore global and regional differences in IBD incidence and prevalence. He combines genetic, microbiome, and proteomic data to identify molecular subgroups of IBD, improving disease prognosis and advancing personalized treatment approaches. His research also investigates IBD natural history, complications including colorectal cancer, and develops predictive tools to enhance patient outcomes through multidisciplinary care models and eHealth solutions. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on dietary quality in IBD patients, cancer risks in polyposis syndromes, biomarkers for disease monitoring, anti-TNF treatment outcomes, novel drug formulations for ulcerative colitis, and evidence-based clinical guidelines. These works span multiple disciplines including gastroenterology, epidemiology, biomarker research, clinical trial design, and healthcare economics. He leads multiple major research initiatives including the Danish Inflammatory bowel disease Biobank (DIB), EPI-IBD, and The INCEPTION study. As an associate editor for the Journal of Crohn's and Colitis and editorial board member for Gut and Alimentary Pharmaceuticals and Therapeutics, he plays a significant role in shaping the scientific discourse in his field. He is actively involved in professional organizations including the European Crohn's & Colitis Organization (Guideline Committee 2024-2027) and United European Gastroenterology.
