Igor Pioro is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering at Ontario Tech University's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. He serves as the Founding Editor (2014) and Editor-in-Chief (2014-2024) of the ASME Journal of Nuclear Engineering & Radiation Science. His academic position places him at the forefront of nuclear engineering research and education, with particular focus on thermalhydraulics and advanced reactor concepts. Dr. Pioro's educational background includes a Doctor of Technical Sciences (1992) and PhD (1983) from the Institute of Engineering Thermal Physics, National Academy of Sciences in Kiev, Ukraine, and a Master of Applied Science in Thermal Physics with Diploma of Honour (1979) from Kiev Polytechnic Institute (now National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute"). In 2013, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor's Degree from the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kiev Polytechnic Institute". His research focuses on three primary areas: Nuclear engineering (thermalhydraulics of nuclear reactors and Generation IV nuclear-reactor concepts), Thermal Sciences (boiling, forced convection including supercritical pressures), and Heat Engineering (heat exchangers, two-phase thermosyphons, heat-recovery systems). His work has significantly contributed to understanding heat transfer phenomena at supercritical pressures, which is critical for next-generation nuclear reactor designs. Analysis of Dr. Pioro's publication record reveals a strong emphasis on nuclear power systems, thermalhydraulics, and energy sustainability. His recent work (2023-2024) shows an expanded focus on renewable energy integration and broader energy system analysis, while maintaining his core expertise in nuclear thermalhydraulics and reactor design. The publications demonstrate a consistent trajectory from fundamental heat transfer research to applied nuclear engineering and broader energy system analysis. Dr. Pioro's scientific recognition includes numerous prestigious awards and fellowships: Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) since 2023 Foreign Fellow of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) since 2021 Fellow of Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers (CSME) since 2015 Fellow of Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) since 2013 Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) since 2012 Harold A. Smith Outstanding Contribution Award from CNS (2017) Medal 60-th Anniversary of NED (ASME) (2016) Canadian Nuclear Society Education and Communication Award (2011) Ontario Tech University Research Excellence Award - Senior Category (2011) Throughout his career, Dr. Pioro has been actively involved in numerous international conferences, serving in leadership roles including as General Conference Chair for ICONE20-POWER2012. His editorial leadership of the ASME Journal of Nuclear Engineering & Radiation Science has significantly advanced the field's scholarly communication. His research has been supported through various grants and collaborations with international organizations including the IAEA. Dr. Pioro works within the Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre (ERC) at Ontario Tech University, where he maintains laboratory facilities for thermalhydraulic experiments. His team has conducted extensive research on supercritical water heat transfer phenomena, which has direct applications to Generation IV nuclear reactor designs, particularly Supercritical Water-cooled Reactors (SCWRs).
