Associate Professor
Dr. Kristine M. Schutz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where she co-coordinates the Language, Literacies, and Learning MEd program. Her research focuses on improving literacy instruction in elementary classrooms for historically marginalized communities, disrupting the theory-practice binary in teacher education, and designing learning opportunities that leverage students’ linguistic and cultural assets. Education: PhD in Educational Studies (Literacy, Language & Culture), University of Michigan MSEd in Education & Social Policy, Northwestern University BA in Spanish & Organizational Studies, University of Michigan Recent scholarship highlights her work on climate justice education through children’s literature, emphasizing sustainable futures and interdisciplinary approaches. She has secured grants like the UIC Community Engagement Grant for "From Page to Stage" and a Synergy Grant for integrating humanities into elementary science curricula. Her publications span topics from critical conversations in literacy instruction to humanizing pedagogies in teacher education. Dr. Schutz also engages in professional leadership as Area Chair for Pre-Service Teacher Education in Literacy at the Literacy Research Association and as a committee member for the William S. Gray Citation of Merit Award at the International Literacy Association.
