Larry Hayashi serves as Linguistics Instructor and Assistant Vice President of Administration at the Canadian Institute of Linguistics (CanIL), teaching LIN(G) 587 Lexicography and LIN(G) 580 Field Methods while leading language software development initiatives since 2001. His work bridges theoretical linguistics with practical tool creation for global language documentation. His educational background includes: M.A. in Linguistics from University of Oregon (1991) B.Ed. in Secondary Sciences from University of Alberta (1986) B.Sc. in Biology from University of Alberta (1984) Hayashi's research centers on lexicography and computational linguistics, specializing in database-driven solutions for dictionary development and field linguistics. He pioneers software tools that transform linguistic theory into practical resources for community language workers, emphasizing user-centered design and cross-platform interoperability through projects like FieldWorks and Phonology Assistant. Analysis of his publications reveals a consistent trajectory from theoretical syntax (1980s-1990s) toward applied computational linguistics (2000s-present), with increasing focus on collaborative dictionary building, African language documentation, and open-source software ecosystems for endangered language preservation. Hayashi actively mentors through Summer@CanIL programs and co-leads development teams for FieldWorks Language Explorer, Phonology Assistant, and Sm’algyax Living Legacy Talking Dictionary. His work integrates ultimate frisbee and meals with students to build community beyond classroom instruction, reflecting his philosophy of holistic language development service.
