Prof. Thomas ENGEL is a Full Professor of Computer Networks and Telecommunications at the University of Luxembourg's Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine. He leads the SECAN-Lab, focusing on performance, privacy, and identity management in Next Generation Networks. His roles include membership in the European Security Research Advisory Board (ESRAB) and NATO's Information and Communication Security Panel. He coordinated major EU projects like the u-2010 Integrated Project involving IPv6-based Next Generation Networks. Prof. Engel holds a PhD in Physics and Computer Science from the University of Saarbrücken (1996) and has extensive industry experience as co-founder and vice-director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Telematics. His research spans network security, IoT, vehicular communications, and privacy-preserving protocols. Notable contributions include work on 5G-V2X security, blockchain for vehicular privacy, and anomaly detection in SCADA systems. He chairs Luxembourg's National IPv6 Council and advises NATO on electronic communications. His SECAN-Lab explores cutting-edge topics like decentralized data preprocessing and federated learning for vehicular networks. Prof. Engel's publications address challenges in automotive cybersecurity, encrypted traffic analysis, and network slicing. Recent work emphasizes cross-border 6G-V2X security and causal discovery methods for data preprocessing. He has led interdisciplinary initiatives at the University of Luxembourg's SnT center and advocates for standardized data pipelines in IoT ecosystems.
