Syed H. Murshid is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Florida Institute of Technology . His research pioneers advancements in optical fiber bandwidth through hybrid optical architectures, notably inventing spatial domain multiplexing (SDM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) techniques. His work aims to achieve communication systems exceeding 100 Tb/s by combining SDM, OAM, and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). His research spans: Photonics Fiber optics Optical communication systems Free space optical communication Modified optical PAM4 modulation schemes Professor Murshid has filed multiple patents and contributed to cutting-edge developments in the Optronics Lab, including SDM, OAM, and omnidirectional free space optical receivers. His work has been published in SPIE, OSA, and Optics and Laser Technology. Scientific Awards: Florida's five most influential scientists (Florida Trend, 2004) Teacher of the Year (College of Engineering, 2000-2001) Postdoctoral Fellow (Florida Tech, 1997-1998) He teaches courses such as ECE 5351 (Fiber-Optic Communication Systems) and ECE 5352 (Fiber-Optic Sensors Systems). The Optronics Lab, where he leads research, focuses on multi-Tb/s hybrid optical transmission architectures.
