Research Fellow
Ioanna Kyprianou is a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Energy Department of the Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre (EEWRC) at The Cyprus Institute. Her work focuses on interdisciplinary research addressing energy poverty, urban sustainability, and climate change impacts. She holds a BSc in Biology from the University of Sheffield (2012), an MSc in Energy Science from Utrecht University (2015), and a PhD in Energy, Environment and Atmospheric Sciences from The Cyprus Institute (2022). Her research interests include sustainable energy use in urban environments, thermal comfort, occupant-centric smart buildings, energy vulnerabilities, and public health linkages. She explores how socioeconomic factors and climate policies intersect with energy affordability and health outcomes, particularly in Mediterranean contexts. Her recent work emphasizes participatory urban design, energy policy analysis, and mitigation strategies for climate-related health risks. Ioanna’s publications highlight innovative approaches to energy management systems, building retrofitting strategies, and participatory frameworks for resilient urban development. Her research often uses case studies from Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region to propose actionable solutions for sustainable cities and healthcare facilities. Her work aligns with global goals for climate resilience and equity, addressing critical challenges such as energy poverty mortality, fuelwood utilization as a cultural survival strategy, and the implementation of zero-energy building standards. She actively contributes to policy dialogues and interdisciplinary collaborations to bridge academic insights with real-world urban and environmental challenges.
