Previously, he was Faculty Director of Research and Innovation from 2017 to 2022, Interim Head of the Department of Geography until September 2017, and Head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning between 2012 and 2016. He joined the University of Sheffield in 2011 as Professor of Town and Regional Planning in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (formerly TRP). Before this, he was appointed Professor at the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research at Sheffield Hallam University in 2007, having previously worked as a research associate at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow, and as a lecturer in Housing Studies at the University of Glasgow. His educational background includes an MA in Politics from the University of Glasgow in 1994 and an MPhil in Urban Policy from the same institution in 1998. During his studies, he also lectured part-time in HM Prison, Saughton, Edinburgh. Professor Flint's research focuses on urban studies, housing policy, and urban governance, with particular expertise in social exclusion, community cohesion, and the welfare state. His work often examines the intersections of housing, urban space, and social control, with a critical perspective on how policies affect marginalized populations. He has extensively researched anti-social behavior interventions, welfare conditionality, and the politics of urban marginality. His scholarship applies theoretical frameworks from sociological traditions, particularly drawing on the work of Norbert Elias regarding civilizing processes. His recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on housing and urban governance, with emerging work on the building safety crisis following the Grenfell Tower fire, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on domestic space, and the temporal dimensions of estate regeneration. His scholarly output shows a consistent engagement with critical urban theory and policy analysis. Among his notable professional recognitions, Professor Flint served as a REF sub-panel member in 2014 and 2021, reflecting his standing as a leading expert in his field. He was previously Co-Managing Editor of the Housing Studies Journal and serves as a Trustee of both the Urban Studies Foundation and the Housing Studies Charitable Trust. Throughout his career, Professor Flint has demonstrated leadership in research administration and academic governance. His transition from departmental leadership to faculty-level and now university-wide research leadership positions indicates significant recognition of his administrative capabilities alongside his scholarly contributions.
