Associate Professor
Jonathan Trump is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Connecticut, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He specializes in observational studies of active galaxies and black hole physics, focusing on the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. His research utilizes multi-wavelength telescopic data from facilities like Chandra, Hubble, JWST, and ground-based observatories. Education: Ph.D. in Astronomy (2010) from the University of Arizona, and dual B.Sc. degrees in Astronomy and Physics (2004) from Penn State University. Prior to UConn, he held postdoctoral positions at UC Santa Cruz and was a Hubble Fellow at Penn State. Research interests include: black hole accretion mechanisms, time-domain monitoring of AGN variability, reverberation mapping for black hole mass estimation, and the interplay between galactic evolution and AGN activity. He leads major projects like the SDSS-V Black Hole Mapper and has pioneered JWST observations of high-redshift galaxies. Publications highlight breakthroughs in AGN diagnostics, extreme emission-line galaxy studies, and the discovery of obscured AGN populations at z > 5. Recent work focuses on cosmic dawn galaxy properties and obscured AGN demographics using JWST/NIRSpec and CEERS survey data.
