Professor
Edward Feil is a Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath, holding roles as Co-Director of the Centre for Mathematical Biology and Milner Centre for Evolution. His research focuses on bacterial population genomics and antimicrobial resistance, integrating environmental and clinical perspectives. He leads/co-leads multiple high-profile projects including studies on Klebsiella spp. transmission in Italy, environmental AMR in South Africa, and antibiotic resistance surveillance in Thailand. His research interests span bacterial pathogens, molecular epidemiology, and One Health approaches. Notable achievements include the Zoological Society of London Scientific Medal (2010) and ISI Highly Cited Researcher status (2015). Feil has pioneered whole-genome sequencing for pathogen tracking, particularly in Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Recent work emphasizes wastewater microbiology and metagenomics, with key contributions to understanding non-antibiotic drug impacts on AMR and Arctic microbial diversity. He collaborates internationally on projects funded by MRC, EPSRC, and The Royal Society. Awards: Zoological Society of London Medal (2010), ISI Highly Cited Researcher (2015) Grants/Projects: 18 active/completed projects including MRC-funded OH-DART and EPSRC ReNEW consortia.
