James DiCarlo is the Peter de Florez Professor of Neuroscience and Department Head in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is also an Investigator at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. His research bridges neuroscience and machine learning to study neuronal mechanisms underlying visual object recognition and cortical computations. Dr. DiCarlo earned his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering and M.D. from The Johns Hopkins University in 1998, followed by postdoctoral training in primate visual neurophysiology at Baylor College of Medicine. He joined the MIT faculty in 2002 and received tenure in 2009. His research utilizes large-scale neurophysiology, brain imaging, optogenetics, and computational simulations to explore how visual representations are formed in the brain. This work has implications for advancing machine vision systems, developing neural prosthetics, and understanding conditions like agnosia, autism, and dyslexia. His recent publications focus on deep learning models, cortical computations, and invariant object recognition.
