Associate Professor
Stephen O'Neill is an Associate Professor in English and Shakespeare Studies at Maynooth University, previously serving as Head of Department. He holds a PhD from University College Dublin and has held academic roles in both UCD and Maynooth. His research focuses on Shakespeare’s afterlives, digital adaptations, early modern literature, and arboreal humanities. Notable works include Shakespeare and YouTube (2014) and Staging Ireland (2007). He co-edited the Arden Research Handbook of Shakespeare and Adaptation (2022) and led the LIT: Literature and Ireland's Trees project, exploring arboreal representation and climate engagement. Teaching interests include climate-engaged learning through literature (EN342 module), early modern drama, and digital media adaptation. He received the 2023 Maynooth University Teaching Award and a 2022 CTL Teaching Fellowship for eco-journaling initiatives. His research spans Shakespearean intertexts in HBO’s Westworld , maternal narratives in Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet , and critical arboreal studies. He is a member of the Shakespeare Association of America and Irish Renaissance Seminar. O'Neill supervises PhD students in Shakespeare studies, digital cultures, and arboreal humanities. His funded projects include Research Ireland’s LIT initiative, establishing an arboreal network and digital exhibitions. He contributes to conferences globally, blending scholarly rigor with public engagement through radio, webinars, and guest lectures.
