Professor Brian R. Gibney is a faculty member at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) , where he holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences . He also serves as the Interim Dean for the Sciences at the CUNY Graduate Center . Education: B.S. in Chemistry, Florida State University (1990) Ph.D. in Chemistry (General), University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (1994) Research Interests: Professor Gibney's research lies at the intersection of inorganic and biological chemistry , specifically in the field of bioinorganic chemistry . His work focuses on understanding how nature uses protein ligands to modulate the chemical properties of metals. This involves the de novo design of metalloproteins to test biochemical hypotheses about metalloprotein structure-function relationships. Key areas include: Design and synthesis of simplified metalloproteins (maquettes) Role of thioether linkages in cytochromes c Zinc finger transcription factors and their Zn(II) binding properties Heme-protein interactions and electron transfer mechanisms Awards and Honors: American Chemical Society Fellow (2018) Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award Young Bioenergeticist Award , Biophysical Society Outstanding Four Year Graduate Chemistry Teacher Award , New York Local Section (2019) Chemists with Disabilities Inclusion Award , American Chemical Society Grants and Funding: Professor Gibney's research has been supported by prestigious funding agencies including: National Institutes of Health (NIH) American Heart Association European Commission PSC-CUNY multiple grants Laboratory and Team: Professor Gibney leads the Gibney Lab , which focuses on using inorganic chemistry and protein biophysics to design and study metalloproteins. The lab provides opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to engage in cutting-edge research in bioinorganic chemistry.
