Carolina M Travalia is Professor of Spanish, Latin American, and Bilingual Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where she has been a faculty member since 2007. She holds a Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, a D.M.L. from Middlebury College in Spanish and Italian, an M.A. in Transatlantic Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a B.A. in Spanish and Italian from the University of Notre Dame, summa cum laude. Her scholarly interests include: Dubbese (language of American films dubbed into Spanish) Translation of children's literature, particularly the Manolito Gafotas series Phraseology: collocations, idioms, expressions, routine formulas, and proverbs Italian cinema and language Second language learning and teaching Travalia's research and publications focus on translation strategies, dubbing practices, and linguistic pedagogy. Her recent work analyzes gender representation in dubbed Disney films, cultural adaptation in children's literature translation, and the use of audiovisual materials in Spanish language classrooms. She is currently developing a textbook on Spanish for the Professions to prepare students for using Spanish in their careers and local communities. She has presented her work at international conferences including ALDEEU and Transcreación, and has been invited to speak at Middlebury College and the University of Lausanne. Her publications appear in journals such as Meta , Hispania , Babel , and Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics , as well as in edited volumes on translation and linguistics. Travalia is actively involved in community engagement: Co-founder of Geneva Habla, promoting bilingualism through events, workshops, and a summer camp Member of Vamos Geneva, a bilingual education task force improving dual language programs Teaches Spanish to children at local schools and the Geneva Public Library with colleague May Farnsworth Oversees student-led Spanish teaching initiatives in the Literatura Infantil course She is affiliated with professional organizations including the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), American Association for Teachers of Italian (AATI), and Modern Language Association (MLA).
