Professor Lily Xiao serves as a Matthew Flinders Professor at Flinders University's College of Nursing and Health Sciences, where she is a Full Member of the Caring Futures Institute and Associate Member of the Flinders Digital Health Research Centre. Internationally recognized for her work in dementia caregiving research, she is one of four key contributors to the WHO iSupport program, a global online resource for dementia caregivers serving over 55 million people worldwide. Her educational background includes: PhD, Flinders University (2007) Master of Nursing, Flinders University (2003) Post Registration Diploma, West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University, China (1990) Professor Xiao's research spans caregiver support in dementia care, chronic disease management, cross-cultural dementia care for older people, and dementia education for professionals and family carers. She possesses deep expertise in how cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity impacts communication and quality of care in aged care settings. Her methodological approaches encompass qualitative studies (phenomenological research, critical ethnography), quantitative methods (cross-sectional studies, randomized controlled trials), and critical action research. She actively contributes to global health equity, having participated in the WHO Nursing and Midwife Scholar Programme in 2015. Her extensive publication record demonstrates consistent research output across dementia care, aged care workforce development, and cross-cultural health interventions. Recent work focuses on culturally tailored adaptations of the iSupport program, hybrid care models for urinary incontinence management, and systematic reviews of interventions for older adults with sarcopenia. Her research consistently addresses practical challenges in dementia care while maintaining strong theoretical foundations. Her scientific recognition includes: 2022-2026 Matthew Flinders Professorship Fellowship in the Australian College of Nursing Guest Professorships at Central South University and Sichuan University in China 2013 South Australian Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Award International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (2003-2006) Professor Xiao has supervised 13 principal PhD/Master's students across dementia care (8), post-stroke transition (2), chronic disease management (2), and nursing mentorship (1), plus 3 associate supervisions. Her current research portfolio includes over $5 million in active grants, most notably a $2.97 million MRFF grant for scaling up the Culturally Tailored iSupport model through 2029. She has led the development of the world's first evidence-based Cross-cultural care program for aged care staff, now promoted by major stakeholders including the Australian Government Department of Health. Her leadership extends to international collaborative research with Chinese institutions and service on the WHO Dementia Knowledge Exchange Committee. She has pioneered the adaptation of face-to-face training into MOOC format to increase accessibility for aged care staff nationwide, demonstrating her commitment to translating research into practical, scalable solutions for real-world care challenges.
