Senior Lecturer
Dr. Trudie Walters is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Tourism, Sport & Society within Lincoln University's Faculty of Environment, Society and Design. With a PhD from the University of Otago, she specializes in events and leisure studies with three distinct research programs focusing on the contribution of leisure, the practice of leisure, and advancing teaching methods in these fields. Her work spans multiple disciplines including wellbeing, social justice, and sustainability. Her research interests include: Events as sites for empowerment, resistance and decolonization Leisure's contribution to wellbeing and community development Media representation of leisure practices Innovative teaching methods for employment-ready graduates Dr. Walters' recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on sustainable event practices, Indigenous perspectives, disability inclusion, and DEIJ frameworks in event management. Her work consistently addresses how events can promote social justice, cultural resilience, and ecological sustainability while challenging traditional power structures. Her notable awards include the 2024 Emerald Literati Outstanding Paper Award and the 2025 Lincoln University Research Fellowship. She serves on editorial boards for World Leisure Journal, Event Management, and Leisure Studies, and has held leadership roles in the Australian and New Zealand Association for Leisure Studies and World Leisure Organisation. Dr. Walters actively engages with industry through consultancy work with Tourism New Zealand and provides media commentary on event-related topics. She supervises graduate students interested in events and leisure research and welcomes collaborations on projects addressing wellbeing, sustainability, and social justice in event contexts.
