Christopher Moorman is a Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University, where he also holds the NCSU University Faculty Scholar title. His research focuses on global change impacts on wildlife, forest and urban wildlife ecology, fire management, and avian conservation in temperate and tropical regions. Education: B.S. University of Georgia (1992) M.S. University of Georgia (1995) Ph.D. Clemson University (1999) Dr. Moorman’s work addresses habitat management for species like wild turkeys and white-tailed deer, evaluates climate change effects on wildlife demographics, and explores fire ecology in eastern forests. His expertise spans wildlife habitat restoration, disturbance-dependent species conservation, and the intersection of forestry and biodiversity. Recent publications highlight collaborations with stakeholders such as the Southeast Wild Turkey Technical Committee and the National Wild Turkey Federation. His research on urban-rural deer dynamics, climate vulnerability assessments, and fire effects informs policy and management practices across North Carolina and the southeastern U.S. Scientific Awards: NCSU University Faculty Scholar Grants: Dr. Moorman leads projects funded by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and USDA Forest Service, including a $1.48M grant on deer ecology across urban-rural gradients and a $644K multi-scale wild turkey study. His work bridges ecological research with socio-economic valuations of wildlife management areas and sustainable forest planning. Labs and Teams: As director of NC State’s Global Change and Wildlife Lab, he collaborates with interdisciplinary teams addressing ecosystem resilience, prescribed fire impacts, and conservation strategies for endangered species like red-cockaded woodpeckers.
