David McCausland is a Professor (Personal Chair) in the Department of Economics at the University of Aberdeen's Business School. He currently serves as Head of Economics and Director of Education for the Business School. He has held multiple leadership roles including Head of Economics (2014–2017, and again from 2024), Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Deputy Head of the Business School. He is accepting PhD students and is actively engaged in research and academic service. B.Sc. Economics – University of Hull, 1990 M.Sc. Economics – University of Warwick, 1992 Ph.D. Economics – Keele University, 1995 David's principal research interests lie in macroeconomics, labour economics, health economics, and open economy modelling. His work explores earnings determination, fiscal policy, public debt, and the socioeconomic determinants of well-being. He is particularly known for his research on health and income, unemployment, and economic policy in the UK and EU contexts. His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on fiscal and monetary policy, public debt sustainability in developing economies, and the socioeconomic impacts of macroeconomic conditions. He frequently contributes expert commentary to public discourse via platforms like The Conversation , addressing topics such as Brexit, austerity, interest rates, and Scottish independence. His work bridges academic rigor with public policy relevance. HEA Economics Network 2006 E-learning Award 2009 College of Arts and Social Sciences Award for Excellence in Teaching (student-nominated) 2011 Student Nominated Teaching Award from the Economics Network David has supervised numerous PhD students in areas such as public debt, health expenditure, FDI, and economic growth. He has secured significant research funding, including three EU 5th Framework grants (Epicurus, Sociold, HealthAtWork), and serves as Managing Editor of the International Review of Economics Education . He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a CABS Certified Management and Business Educator. He is affiliated with the Centre for Labour Market Research (CeLMR) and has contributed to national reviews such as the QAA Economics Subject Benchmark Statement.
