Assistant Professor
Ania Majewska is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. She holds a PhD in Ecology from the University of Georgia, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Research and Science Teaching at Emory University. Her research spans two major areas: biology education innovation and infectious disease ecology. In education, she focuses on course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), AR/VR applications for anatomy/physiology learning, and culturally responsive teaching strategies. In disease ecology, her work examines how non-native species and human activities influence pathogen spread, with a focus on monarch butterflies, helminths like Guinea worm, and zoonotic risks in wildlife and shelter animals. Her educational background includes a BS in Biology (Boston University), MS in Wildlife Biology (University of Montana), and a PhD in Ecology (UGA). She has pioneered studies on monarch butterfly conservation, including parasite dynamics, larval diet impacts on flight performance, and the effects of non-native milkweed on population health. Her lab also investigates copepod consumption patterns in relation to Guinea worm transmission and has developed innovative tools like the Gutsy game to teach microbiome concepts. Recent research highlights include spatial analyses of vector-borne pathogens in shelter dogs, clinical trials for Guinea worm treatments, and reviews of experimental approaches in monarch conservation. Her work bridges basic science with applied solutions, emphasizing One Health principles and community engagement. The Majewska lab collaborates across disciplines to address ecological and educational challenges in veterinary medicine and biology education.
