Dr. Jerome Laurence is an Associate Professor of Academic Surgery at the University of Sydney’s Central Clinical School, affiliated with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He specializes in transplantation surgery, hepatobiliary and upper gastrointestinal oncology, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. His clinical practice focuses on liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation, vascular reconstruction for abdominal malignancies, and end-stage renal disease management. Dr. Laurence’s academic journey includes a MBChB from the University of Otago and a PhD in transplantation immunology from the University of Sydney. He completed fellowships in Toronto, focusing on hepatobiliary and transplant surgery. His research spans immunology of transplant rejection, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and surgical outcomes analysis, with a strong emphasis on systematic reviews and clinical decision-making. His research interests include improving transplant outcomes through innovations like normothermic machine perfusion and addressing complications in renal and liver transplantation. Awards include the 2012 ANZHPBA Prize and the 2004 Northcote Scholarship. Current projects involve clinical trials on prophylactic drain insertion in kidney transplants and renal dysfunction post-major liver resection. He supervises students, including Isaac EALING on surgical education needs. Grants include NHMRC funding for kidney transplant outcomes research. Dr. Laurence is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and member of international transplant societies. His work bridges clinical practice, research, and education in advanced surgical fields.
