Ileana-Cristina Benea-Chelmus is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at the Hybrid Photonics Laboratory (HYLAB) within the Institute of Electrical and Microengineering (IEM) at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). She is also a Research Associate affiliated with Prof. Federico Capasso's group at Harvard University. Her career spans prestigious institutions including KIT, EPFL, Harvard, and IMEC, with leadership roles in PhD programs and community engagement. Educational Background: Bachelor in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (2010), KIT, Germany Master in Optics and Photonics with distinction (2013), KIT ERASMUS Exchange student in Physics at EPFL (2011) Her research focuses on quantum sensing, metrology, and hybrid electro-optic technologies, aiming to achieve terahertz speeds through integrated photonics. She has pioneered time-domain quantum optics at terahertz frequencies and developed ultrasensitive detectors. Her work bridges nanophotonics, ultrafast optics, and high-frequency electronics. Scientific Awards: 2022 Women in ultrafast science global award (3rd rank) 2021 PRIMA grant 2019 Hans Eggenberger Prize, SNSF Early Mobility Fellowship, European Physical Society thesis prize, Swiss Physical Society thesis prize Multiple student awards (2017-2008) She supervises seven PhD students in the Microengineering doctoral program and teaches courses including Electrotechnics II and Advanced Photonics. She serves on PhD committees for Microsystems & Microelectronics and Photonics programs.
