Yury Gogotsi is a Distinguished University Professor and Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Endowed Chair in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University. He also serves as Founding Director of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute and has held leadership roles such as Associate Dean of the College of Engineering for Special Projects. MS, Kyiv Polytechnic (1984) PhD, Kyiv Polytechnic (1986) DSc, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1995) Gogotsi's research revolutionizes nanomaterials for energy storage, electrochemical capacitors, and advanced manufacturing. He discovered MXenes, pioneered the tuning of carbide-derived carbons' porosity, and developed novel processes for nanotube and nanodiamond synthesis. His work spans high-pressure surface science , microscopic observation of water in carbon nanotubes , and polyhedral nanotube synthesis , creating materials with applications in healthcare , optoelectronics , space exploration , and energy systems . As a Highly Cited Researcher in Materials Science and Chemistry and a Citations Laureate in Physics , his research has global impact. He supervised dozens of PhD students, many now faculty at leading institutions like ETH Zurich and TU Delft, and has contributed to 15+ years of EU-funded projects including the Erasmus Mundus MESC program. 2024 Blaise Pascal Medal 2023 Fellow, US National Academy of Inventors 2021 MRS Medal 2021 Royal Society of Chemistry Horizon Prize 2020 Ceramic Prize (World Academy of Ceramics) 2019 Fellow, European Academy of Sciences 2018 Citations Laureate 2004 Academician, World Academy of Ceramics Gogotsi leads the Nanomaterials Group at Drexel, focusing on 2D carbides/nitrides (MXenes) combined with nanostructures for multifunctional materials. He previously served as Associate Editor for ACS Nano and Carbon , and holds honorary doctorates from European universities.
