Afshin Rezaei-Zare is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at York University. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tehran and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto (2005-2009). His career spans academic and industrial roles, including 7 years at Hydro One Networks Inc. as a specialist in power system planning and reliability. Registered Professional Engineer (Ontario) Senior Member of IEEE Associate Editor, IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery Chair, IEEE Task Force on Power Equipment Vulnerability to GIC His research focuses on power system resilience to geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) , real-time simulation, and electric vehicle energy management . He pioneered the world’s first in-service GMD real-time simulator for Ontario Grid Control Center and contributed to renewable energy system optimization. His recent publications emphasize transformer protection under GIC conditions , EV battery charging analytics , and smart grid technologies . He has led critical advancements in GMD monitoring and mitigation strategies, including adaptive machine learning for battery state-of-charge prediction and DFACTS-based voltage unbalance control.
