Professor Daniel McGinnis is the Director of the Department F.-A. Forel for Environmental and Aquatic Sciences at the University of Geneva. He holds an Associate Professor position and specializes in limnology, aquatic biogeochemistry, and the dynamics of greenhouse gas emissions in aquatic systems. His research focuses on methane transport, lake stratification, and the interplay between physical and biogeochemical processes in water bodies. McGinnis earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech (2003), followed by postdoctoral work at Eawag (Switzerland). He has extensive professional experience, including roles at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology (Germany), University of Southern Denmark, and GEOMAR (Germany). His work spans field studies in rivers, lakes, and marine environments, with notable projects in the Danube River, Lake Baikal, and Arctic regions. Key research interests include methane dynamics, aquatic eddy correlation techniques, sediment-water interactions, and the impact of climate change on aquatic systems. McGinnis has supervised several Ph.D. students, focusing on topics like methane fluxes and lake restoration. He has led numerous scientific cruises and expeditions, including studies in Greenland and the North Sea. His publications highlight advancements in understanding methane emissions from lakes and rivers, the role of submerged macrophytes, and the paradox of methane production in oxic waters. McGinnis actively collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, integrating field observations, modeling, and cutting-edge analytical techniques to address global environmental challenges.
