Assistant Professor
Archana Anand is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at San Francisco State University (SFSU), joining in 2022. She holds a B.Eng from the National University of Singapore (2007), a PhD in Ecology & Biodiversity from the University of Hong Kong (2019), and completed postdoctoral research at Stanford University and Columbia University. Her laboratory focuses on environmental microbiology, particularly microbe-microbe interactions in environmental reservoirs such as soil, biofilms, and wastewater to safeguard human and environmental health against disease burdens. Research interests include environmental health, wastewater epidemiology, climate change ecology, and microbial ecology. Her work integrates field studies, lab experiments, and computational tools to address global change microbiology challenges. Recent projects explore antimicrobial resistance in wastewater, microplastic impacts on marine ecosystems, and SARS-CoV-2 surveillance through wastewater analysis. Publications emphasize wastewater-based epidemiology, microbial community dynamics, and environmental health implications. Her lab’s interdisciplinary approach bridges basic research with applied solutions for environmental and public health challenges. No scientific awards are explicitly listed, but her active research portfolio indicates potential recognition in the field. Labs/Teams: The Anand Lab at Hensill Hall (offices 722; labs 727,732,734) focuses on global change microbiology, with ongoing projects in urbanized coastal ecosystems, oyster reef microbiomes, and wine terroir research. The lab website provides further details on current initiatives and collaborations.
