Professor
Dr. Philip Jessop is a Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Queen's University, Canada, and holds cross appointments at the Beaty Water Research Centre. He also serves as an Honorary Professor at the University of Jordan, Adjunct Professor at Hashemite University, and Executive Research Director at Forward Water Technologies Inc. His research focuses on green chemistry, particularly CO2-responsive materials for environmental applications. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia and a B.Sc. from the University of Waterloo. Education: Ph.D. (Chemistry, UBC, 1991), B.Sc. (Chemistry, Waterloo, 1986) Affiliations: Canada Research Chair in Green Chemistry, Royal Society of Canada Fellow, American Chemical Society Fellow Dr. Jessop's research emphasizes sustainable technologies like CO2-switchable polymers for waste management, carbon capture, and water treatment. His lab develops materials that respond to environmental triggers, enabling applications in forward osmosis, catalysis, and solvent design. Recent work includes CO2-responsive hydrogels and surfactants for industrial and environmental solutions. Notable achievements include the NSERC Polanyi Award (2008), Eni Award (2013), and leadership roles in GreenCentre Canada. His lab's innovations have spun off companies and influenced global green chemistry practices. Media engagements include a TikTok series, 'Jessop’s Which Is Greener?,' which educates the public on sustainability. Awards: NSERC Brockhouse Prize (2019), Canadian Green Chemistry Award (2012), ACS Fellow (2023) Grants and Advising: Directed over 20 graduate students, including recent awardees Olga Torres-Rocha (CSChE Best Dissertation) and Rachel Korchinsky (CEGSA Award) Labs/Teams: Jessop Group at Queen's University, collaborations with institutions in Jordan and industry partners like Forward Water Technologies.
