Associate Professor
Rose Cory is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Program in the Environment (PitE) at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Her research focuses on aquatic geochemistry, photochemistry, and organic geochemistry. Key research areas: Carbon cycling in Arctic, temperate, and tropical soils/freshwaters; sunlight-driven oxidation of dissolved organic matter (DOM); microbial degradation processes; iron's role in carbon transformation Her recent work explores DOM dynamics in tropical streams, Arctic groundwater interactions, and cyanobacterial bloom impacts on microbial communities. She leads NSF-funded projects, including a CAREER award (2014), and contributes to the Arctic LTER program. Scientific awards: NSF CAREER Award Rose Cory's lab integrates field studies and modeling to understand how climate change affects DOM degradation pathways, combining optical spectroscopy, DOC/DIC analysis, and mass spectrometry. She mentors PhD candidates Emma Rieb, Emma Johnson, and Masters student Nathan La Framboise, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to Arctic and freshwater systems.
