Professor
Thomas M. Antonsen, Jr. is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, holding joint appointments in the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics. His research focuses on plasma physics, vacuum electronics, nonlinear dynamics, and electromagnetic theory. He has made significant contributions to the theory of magnetically confined plasmas, high-power coherent radiation sources, and beam-wave interaction systems. Antonsen has also pioneered adjoint methods for optimizing vacuum electronic devices and reservoir computing frameworks for complex systems. Education: B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University (1973–1977). Postdoctoral fellow at the Naval Research Laboratory (1976–1977). Research scientist at MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics (1977–1980). Research Interests: Design and stability analysis of vacuum electronic amplifiers (e.g., TWTs, klystrons). Statistical wave physics in complex systems (random coupling models, reverberant enclosures). Applications of reservoir computing for nonlinear system prediction. Optimization of electromagnetic coils and beam optics using adjoint methods. Laser-plasma interactions and coherent radiation generation. Awards & Honors: 2023 American Physical Society James Clerk Maxwell Prize for Plasma Physics. 2022 IEEE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award. Fellow of the American Physical Society (1986) and IEEE (2012). Recipient of the University of Maryland’s highest honor: Distinguished University Professor (2017). Grants & Collaborations: Principal investigator on multiple MURI awards (2020, 2023). Leader of the Bright Beams Collective Research Group. Collaborations with institutions like the Naval Research Laboratory and international universities. Labs & Teams: Member of the Institute for Research in Electronics & Applied Physics (IREAP). Affiliated with the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute. Pioneered the MICHELLE beam optics simulation code and TESLA large-signal code suite.
