Oscar Eduardo Gaggiotti is a Professor and Director of Research at the School of Biology, University of St Andrews. He holds affiliations with the Centre for Research into Ecological & Environmental Modelling, St Andrews Bioinformatics Unit, and Marine Alliance for Science & Technology Scotland (MASTS). His research focuses on spatial patterns of genetic diversity, population genetics, and metapopulation dynamics using Bayesian statistical frameworks. He develops integrative methods combining genetic, demographic, and environmental data to study evolutionary processes and local adaptation. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to life on land and below water. Key collaborations span global institutions, with recent studies on cetaceans, deep-sea ecosystems, and insect population genetics. Gaggiotti has authored over 100 publications, including peer-reviewed articles in Molecular Ecology Resources, PNAS, and Nature Communications. He leads projects such as the H2020-funded Behaviour-Connect initiative and actively participates in academic activities like invited talks and peer reviews. Notable datasets include studies on whale population connectivity and beaked whale genomics. His research emphasizes conservation applications, leveraging cutting-edge techniques like drone sampling for genetic material and deep learning for genomic analysis.
