Research Professor
Dr. Vassiliki Aroniadou-Anderjaska is a Research Professor in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) School of Medicine. With over 30 years of neuroscience research experience, her work spans synaptic plasticity, amygdala physiology, and nerve agent countermeasure development. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Neuroscience (1991) from Kent State University and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, a Master's in Exercise Physiology (1987) from Kent State University, and a B.A. from the University of Athens (1982). Dr. Aroniadou-Anderjaska's research focuses on three primary areas: 1) Developing medical countermeasures against nerve agent toxicity, including the discovery of LY293558 (Tezampanel) as an anticonvulsant/neuroprotectant; 2) Investigating amygdala physiology with implications for epilepsy, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and autism; 3) Elucidating learning and memory mechanisms at cellular/molecular levels. Her recent work (2012-2018) reveals critical roles of NR2A-NMDA receptors, ASIC1a channels, and GluK1 receptors in amygdala circuitry regulation. Earlier studies (1999-2011) established foundational knowledge on olfactory bulb physiology, synaptic plasticity, and nerve agent mechanisms. Her research has directly led to the creation of Proniras, a company funded by BARDA to advance nerve agent countermeasures. Collaborative grants with Dr. Maria Braga have produced significant insights into stress-epilepsy interactions and novel therapeutic targets. Current laboratory work examines rhythmic inhibition in the basolateral amygdala, acid-sensing ion channels in anxiety regulation, and delayed-treatment strategies for nerve agent exposure. The team maintains active research programs in both basic neuroscience and translational medical countermeasure development.
