Assistant Professor
Christine Chuang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, where she leads research in the Inflammation, Metabolism and Oxidation (IMOX) group. Her work focuses on understanding how extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in artery walls are damaged by inflammatory reactive oxidants during chronic inflammatory diseases like atherosclerosis. Dr. Chuang completed her academic training with a Bachelor (Hons) in Biotechnology from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, followed by a PhD investigating "Role of Perlecan in Cartilage Regeneration" at the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, UNSW. She then pursued postdoctoral research at the Heart Research Institute (HRI), University of Sydney, before joining the University of Copenhagen in 2014. Her research program centers on the critical role of extracellular matrix in cardiovascular health and disease. She investigates how oxidative damage to ECM components affects vascular cell function and contributes to atherosclerosis progression. Her work has particular relevance given that cardiovascular disease costs the EU approximately 169 billion Euros annually. Dr. Chuang currently leads four major research projects: (1) Investigating hypoxia effects on ECM generation and expression; (2) Characterizing inflammatory oxidant-modified ECM components and their cellular effects; (3) Studying MPO binding to ECM components; and (4) Evaluating selenium compounds as protective antioxidants. Her research employs advanced techniques including mass spectrometry peptide-mapping, cellular assays, and analysis of human atherosclerotic lesions. Analysis of her recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a strong focus on hypoxic conditions, oxidative modifications to ECM proteins, and their implications for vascular cell behavior. Her work spans biochemical analysis of matrix components, cellular responses to modified ECM, and potential therapeutic interventions targeting oxidative damage. Dr. Chuang's laboratory investigates both fundamental mechanisms of ECM damage and potential clinical applications of their findings, including novel antioxidant strategies and biomarker development for early detection of atherosclerosis.
