Adjunct Professor
Dr. Iwona Pawliczka serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Gdańsk's Faculty of Oceanography and Geography, based at the Hel Marine Station. Her research integrates marine mammalogy, conservation genomics, and environmental toxicology to address critical threats to Baltic Sea ecosystems, with particular focus on harbor porpoises ( Phocoena phocoena ) and grey seals ( Halichoerus grypus ). Her research portfolio demonstrates exceptional depth in three interconnected domains: Conservation Genomics: Leading population structure analyses of harbor porpoises across North Atlantic gradients, utilizing long-read genome assemblies to understand adaptive evolution and inform management units Environmental Toxicology: Pioneering investigations into mercury, rare earth elements, and phenolic compounds across life stages of Baltic grey seals, with emphasis on maternal transfer mechanisms and health impacts Anthropogenic Impact Assessment: Quantifying underwater noise effects from munitions and shipping, developing evidence-based guidelines for offshore wind farms and tourism traffic near critical habitats Analysis of her 15 most recent publications (2021-2025) reveals a strategic shift toward integrated 'One Health' approaches, combining genomic, toxicological, and acoustic methodologies to address cumulative stressors on Baltic marine mammals. This interdisciplinary synthesis directly informs EU-level conservation policy, particularly through her contributions to ICES Working Group on Marine Mammal Ecology (WGMME) and national marine spatial planning initiatives. Her applied work manifests in concrete conservation outcomes including: Development of mandatory guidelines for offshore wind farm environmental impact assessments in Polish waters Creation of tourism traffic protocols for newly established grey seal haul-out sites Implementation frameworks for minimizing fisheries interactions with marine mammals Standardized protocols for handling stranded marine mammals Based at the Hel Marine Station, Dr. Pawliczka's research directly supports the University of Gdańsk's Baltic Sea research infrastructure, contributing to long-term monitoring programs that track population recovery of recolonizing grey seals and critically endangered harbor porpoises in Polish waters.
