Assistant Professor
Ahmer Arif is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on human-computer interaction and social computing, particularly examining the spread and dynamics of misinformation and disinformation during crises. He employs computational analysis, participatory engagement, and qualitative methodologies to explore how solidarity can be fostered in response to these challenges. His interdisciplinary work draws on science and technology studies, postcritical theory, and reflection practices. Education: Ph.D. in Human Centered Design & Engineering, University of Washington (2019) M.S. in Computer Science, Lahore University of Management Sciences (Pakistan) B.Sc. (Honors) in Computer Science with minor in Social Sciences, Lahore University of Management Sciences Research Interests: Arif’s work addresses the intersection of technology and social justice, including designing interventions to counter misinformation, understanding user behavior in crisis scenarios, and promoting ethical reflection in technology design. He has collaborated with organizations like Facebook, Yahoo!, the World Bank, and the UN on projects related to digital inclusion and misinformation. Teaching: Recent courses include INF 385T: Special Topics in Information Science: Misinformation and Disinformation and I 320J/U: Topics in Social Justice Informatics and User Experience Design , emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to misinformation and design ethics.
