Andy Barnes is a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath. His research focuses on AI applications for environmental extremes, machine learning governance, anomaly detection, and societal impacts of technology. He is affiliated with the Centre for Climate Adaptation & Environment Research (CAER), Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning group, and Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change. Barnes holds a PhD in Machine Learning from Bath and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Plymouth. Research Interests: AI for flooding/rainfall prediction, ML operations, distribution shift analysis, and ethical AI Teaching: Machine Learning, Databases, Ethical AI, and Operational ML His recent work includes developing rainfall frequency models for critical infrastructure, anomaly detection in automotive manufacturing, and storm trajectory analysis in South Africa. Projects include KTP collaborations with Dancerace PLC and British Council-funded climate research. Awards include the 2024 'Most Engaging Lecturer' and nomination for Mary Tasker Teaching Excellence. He conducts visiting lectures at the Royal Agricultural University and has contributed to radio discussions on AI in environmental science. Key technical contributions span CNN-based rainfall forecasting, image classification for infrastructure monitoring, and unsupervised learning for climate pattern analysis. Current focus includes long-term rainfall distribution trends and sustainable AI deployment frameworks.
